AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your business mentioned and accurately described in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. It builds on SEO, and focuses on clear answers, consistent brand information across the web and AI-readable pages.
Ask ChatGPT “who’s the best accountant for freelancers in Toronto?” or “what’s the best project management app for small teams?” and you’ll get a confident, written answer, often naming two or three businesses.
If yours isn’t one of them, you didn’t lose a ranking. You weren’t even in the conversation.
That’s the problem answer engine optimization (AEO) solves.
What AEO means
An answer engine is any tool that responds to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. Today that includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.
AEO is the practice of making sure your business:
- Shows up in those answers when it’s relevant
- Is described accurately: what you do, who you serve, why you’re different
- Gets cited with a link back to your website
You’ll also hear it called GEO (generative engine optimization), AI SEO or LLM optimization. Different names, same goal.
How AI tools decide what to say
AI answers come from two sources:
- What the model already learned from training on large amounts of web content
- What it finds right now by searching the web (many tools search live, often using Google or Bing results behind the scenes)
So AI visibility depends on two things: what your website says, and what the rest of the web says about you.
AEO vs SEO: what’s the difference?
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your page in search results | Be included in the AI’s answer |
| Success looks like | A top-3 position and a click | A mention, a citation, an accurate description |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, technical health, content quality | All of SEO, plus clarity, consistency and third-party mentions |
| Measured with | Google Search Console, rank tracking | Prompt tracking, AI referral traffic, brand mentions |
The good news: most AEO work starts with good SEO. AI tools prefer pages that are fast, clearly structured, trustworthy and easy to quote.
5 ways a small business can start with AEO
1. Find the questions your customers ask AI
Write down 10–20 questions a customer might ask before choosing a business like yours. Think conversationally: “Which…”, “What’s the best… for…”, “Is it worth…”, “How much does… cost”. Then ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google and note who gets mentioned.
2. Answer clearly and early on your own pages
Put a short, direct answer near the top of each important page, then expand. Use clear headings that match real questions. AI tools love content they can quote in one or two sentences.
3. Make your brand information consistent everywhere
Your business name, description, services and location should match across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, review sites and directories. Inconsistent information confuses AI models.
4. Earn mentions on sites AI tools trust
Reviews, local directories, industry roundups, podcasts, guest articles and partner pages all shape how AI describes you. Third-party mentions often matter more than anything you say about yourself.
5. Remove technical barriers
- Allow AI crawlers (like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot) in your
robots.txt - Make sure your pages work without JavaScript
- Add schema markup so machines understand who you are
- Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console
- Consider adding an llms.txt file
How long does AEO take?
There’s no fixed timeline. AI tools that search the web live can pick up changes fairly quickly, while what models learned in training changes much more slowly. Most small businesses should treat AEO like SEO: a steady, compounding effort, measured monthly.
The bottom line
Your customers are already asking AI for recommendations. AEO makes sure the answer includes you. Start with the questions, answer them clearly, keep your information consistent, and earn trust beyond your own website.
