What is llms.txt?

Also called: LLMs.txt file

Definition

llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file placed at the root of a website that gives AI tools a short, curated summary of the site and links to its most important pages.

The llms.txt format was proposed in 2024 as a simple way for website owners to point large language models (LLMs) to their best content, similar to how robots.txt gives instructions to crawlers.

What goes in it

A title, a one-paragraph summary of the business, and a list of key pages (services, about, guides) with one-line descriptions, written in Markdown.

Do you need one?

It’s not an official standard, and AI companies don’t all confirm they use it. But it takes minutes to create and costs nothing, so it’s a sensible low-effort step. This website has one.
