What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Also called: GEO, AI SEO, LLM optimization
Generative engine optimization (GEO) means improving how often, and how accurately, your brand appears in answers from generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
GEO and AEO describe the same goal from slightly different angles. “Generative” refers to the AI models that generate answers; “answer engine” refers to the tools people use to get them. In practice, the work is the same.
What GEO involves
- Finding the questions your customers ask AI tools about your category
- Checking which brands and sources those tools currently mention
- Creating content that answers those questions clearly and credibly
- Strengthening third-party signals: reviews, mentions, listings and expert content
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI tools still rely on the open web, and much of what helps you rank in Google also helps you get cited by AI. GEO adds a new layer of measurement and a few new tactics on top of solid SEO.
